Whether you have regained weight after a gastric bypass or you never lost the expected weight, utilizing the Lap Band can give you back the restriction that you felt in the first months after your gastric bypass. The gastric banding surgery will give you the tool necessary to restore your ability to limit your food intake and promote a feeling of fullness (satiety) after meals. This procedure is also considered safer than traditional revisional procedures. As with primary Lap-Band surgery, lap gastric bypass band surgery can most often be placed laparoscopically even if your initial gastric bypass was done open! By placing a Lap-Band around the bypass with gastric banding surgery, we can control the outlet of the stomach via the tightness of the band and restore the restriction that you may have lost over time, or give you the restriction that you may have never had. You will eat less and feel full quicker, contributing to more weight loss.

How Is A Failed Gastric Bypass Defined?

A failed weight loss procedure can be defined as: less than 50% loss of excess weight, weight regained after initial weight loss, an intolerance to normal foods, signs that the overall quality of life is diminishing, or acquiring additional health issues that were caused by the procedure.

Failed gastric bypass (whether by a less than expected weight loss or weight regain after gastric bypass) can create health risks for those who expect a long-term dramatic weight loss. Regardless of where patients had their surgery, the gastric bypass can fail for any number of reasons.

Why Bypass Failures Happen

There are many reasons that a bypass failure can happen. The stomach pouch may have been too large after the initial surgery. Additionally, the pouch can stretch out over time, allowing patients to eat and drink more. This can occur naturally, or with eating and drinking too much of the wrong types of things. With the various types of gastric bypass and the large number of gastric bypass operations being done, there are many patients who experience weight regain after their gastric bypass.

Managing A Failure

Finding that you fit into the category of a failed gastric bypass can be disappointing, but the best thing you can do is contact an expert in bariatric surgery revisions. At New York Bariatric Group, we have helped many patients who had a previous bariatric surgery, lose more weight. A band over bypass may be a good option if you’re eating more after your gastric bypass.

Why We Offer Band Over Bypass

By putting a Lap Band over a bypass, our weight loss surgeons can provide that feeling of restriction that you had when you first underwent the gastric bypass procedure. The band over bypass can help you feel full with smaller meals, and can help you stay full for longer. When we place a Lap Band around the bypass, we can control the outlet of the stomach via the tightness of the band. We use follow up appointments to adjust the tightness of your band so you achieve optimal results.

Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery is a Restrictive Type of Weight Loss Surgery

During laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding surgery or Lap-Band or Realize band surgery, a medical device is implanted into the body. This consists of a silicone band, which is placed around the upper stomach, and attached to an injection port, which is attached to the abdominal wall under the skin. The port is connected to the gastric band with tubing. The silicone band can be filled with saline via the access port in order to adjust the size of the stomach opening. Adding fluid tightens the band and increases weight loss, while removing liquid loosens the band and reduces weight loss.

I had the gastric bypass. I am Type 2 Diabetic and I wanted to gain control of my sugar. I hit my goal weight in about 5 and half months and I feel fabulous. The procedure has completely changed my life for the better because it has empowered me as a middle aged woman that I can really do everything and anything that I want to do. I don't put an age on anything. I don't say I'm too old for something.
