One-Day Presurgical Workup

At The New York Bariatric Group, we take pride in our all-inclusive approach to bariatric surgery. Our one-day presurgical workup for patients allows them to embrace all the changes that come along with undergoing bariatric procedures and get on their way to their goals by expeditiously completing the pre-operative surgical clearances requirement.

Expedited Clearances

To accommodate the patient’s schedule, we have designed the one-day presurgical workup to expedite the clearance process for surgery. We have put together a team of physicians and providers in-house that specializes in their field so that patient clearances can be completed in as little as 4 hours. All of our specialists also provide post-surgical support, which we highly recommend for our patients.

Cardiology

A cardiologist is a doctor specializing in diseases of the heart. As part of the clearance for surgery, the cardiologist will evaluate the heart and circulatory system and determine if additional testing is necessary.

Here’s what to expect at the cardiology consultation:

A thorough review of your medical history and any heart-related symptoms you've been experiencing.
Physical examination with specific focus on your cardiovascular system, including blood pressure and heart rate checks.
Potential diagnostic tests, such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) or stress test, to assess the heart's electrical activity, heart rate, and overall function.

Pulmonology

A pulmonologist is a doctor specializing in diseases of the lungs. The pulmonologist will evaluate the health of your lungs and your breathing, and determine if additional testing such as pulmonary function tests, etc. is needed.

Here’s what to expect at the cardiology consultation:

A detailed review of your medical history, particularly any respiratory issues or symptoms you may have.
Physical examination, including listening to your lungs and checking your breathing rate.
Possible diagnostic tests, such as spirometry or other pulmonary function tests, to measure your lung capacity and how well your lungs are functioning.

Endocrinology

The endocrinologist specializes in diseases of the endocrine (hormone) organs and the in the management of diabetes. The endocrinology clearance is only applicable for those patients with diabetes. The endocrinologist will help determine whether there are any hormonal causes of obesity that should be addressed before surgery.

Endoscopy

All patients are required to have an upper endoscopy performed before surgery. The endoscopy includes a biopsy for H. pylori, a very common bacteria that causes ulcers. If the bacteria are present, patients receive a course of antibiotics. Retesting will be required to ensure that the bacteria is no longer present.

Here’s what to expect for the endoscopy:

You'll receive instructions about fasting before the procedure, as your stomach needs to be empty to perform the endoscopy.
The doctor will use a thin, flexible tube with a camera (an endoscope) to look at the upper part of your digestive system. Samples for biopsy will be taken during this time.
The procedure is performed under sedation, so you will need someone to drive you home after the procedure.

Sleep Study

Obese patients are at a very high risk of developing a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (where one actually has episodes of stopped breathing while asleep). The sleep study will diagnose the level of Obstructive Sleep Apnea condition.

Here’s what to expect during the sleep study:

The Sleep Study team contacts the patient to review the guidelines, expectations, time allotted for the test and the potential outcomes.
If conducting an at-home sleep study, the sleep study device is mailed with instructions. The sleep study box includes a device with straps, nasal cannula, questionnaire, and a prepaid post-marked envelope to return the device when the test is complete. The device should be worn for one or three nights, as determined by your insurance.

If conducting an in-house sleep study at a New York Bariatric Group sleep lab, patient will be guided by a sleep technician for the stay overnight at one of our premium sleep rooms.
If the patient is unable to complete the sleep study at a New York Bariatric Group sleep lab, or cannot perform the test at home, we will assist with a partner sleep facility.
Once the test is completed, the results are reviewed by an interpreter and patients receive a copy of the results.

Psychology

The Psychologist or Psychiatrist will perform an evaluation prior to weight loss surgery and review the psychological/behvaioral concerns that accompany the procedure. The evaluation must be completed by a psychology professional who is knowlegeble about weight loss surgery.

Here’s what to expect during the psychology consultation:

You will meet with your scheduled professional to review your demographics, medical and family history.
Through the intake, you will review your stressors and complete an assessment for any psychological concerns.
You will discuss your history and active psychological diagnosis and/or treatment, including any history of substance use.
You will discuss your weight loss/gain journey, the potential psychological impacts of bariatric surgery, as well as strategies for coping with post-surgery lifestyle changes.
A reminder that additional pre and post-operative behavioral support groups and individual support will always be available at NYBG.

Nutritionist

It is important to meet with a nutritionist both before and after surgery. The nutirtionist will help educate you about the special dietary requirements before and after weight loss surgery. The relationship with your nutritionist will be an ongoing, long-term one.

Here’s what to expect at the nutrition consultation:

Answering questions about your nutrition history and background. Your dietitian would like to
understand any special nutritional, religious, or cultural food preferences you may have.
Education about the dietary changes required before and after surgery, including portion sizes,
nutrient requirements, and food choices.
Discuss NYBG products available to support you leading up to and following surgery.
Discuss the Virtual Health Partners (VHP) platform and its essential role in your weight loss journey.
You will be provided comprehensive educational materials including your pateint manual,
product list and shopping list.
You will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns or issues you may have and formulate a
personal plan for your nutriton that include strategies for managing dietary changes and
overcoming potential obstacles.

*The New York Bariatric Group one-day presurgical workup is limited to patients covered by
participating commercial insurance plans.
