Some of our bariatric patients, especially those with a weight loss balloon or Lap Band, go home the same day as their procedure. Others stay in the hospital for one to several days. Because our bariatric procedures are often done laparoscopically, the recovery time is shorter on average than it would be with an open procedure.
The procedure you have along with your recovery and other medical conditions will determine how quickly you can go home after surgery. We will review your post-surgery guidelines in detail with you before the day of your procedure, but in general, we will ask you to be mindful of:
You may receive a prescription for post-surgery pain medicine. It is important to refrain from driving as long as you are taking pain medication. Typically our patients take pain medication for about a week.
It will be beneficial to do some movement regularly after your surgery. This will help your recovery. Walking is a great choice of exercise. You don’t have to walk far or quickly, but consistent short walks will add up.
Our team will talk to you about what vitamins you should be taking. Remember, since you’re eating less and are on a restrictive food plan initially, it is very important to keep up with your vitamins.
Our staff will schedule follow up appointments with you. We generally set up the first appointment about a week out from your procedure. We will then continue to see you multiple times throughout your first year. Follow up throughout your weight loss journey is critical. Even though your weight loss procedure will give you a strong chance of success, no one achieves substantial weight loss without the work that complements the surgery. It is through your follow up visits that we can help you stay on track, address any challenges you’re facing, and celebrate your successes with you.
From Our Patients
Before the surgery I was always trying to blend in. I never wanted to be noticed. Now I feel free and I am excited to go out and meet people. I no longer have to hide… I owe you so much! The whole office is great!
I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Garber, Donna the PA and everyone in the office. Everyone is so polite and professional. They have helped me every step of the way.
So far I have lost 83lbs with gastric bypass. I had my surgery with New York Bariatric Group. They made me feel ‘normal.’ They were always caring and supportive, I no longer have trouble bending or walking and my diabetes and high blood pressure are things of the past.
